My Story

18 years ago, looking for a break from the theater world, I booked my first trip to Ireland to seek out the roots of traditional Irish dance known as sean nós or old way. That was the first of many trips, in which I traveled to remote villages in search of people who would teach me.

What I learned over the course of those journeys was not a collection of dances but a completely new way of thinking about the ways art brings people together.

In 2006, with these experiences in mind, I founded the Slán Abhaile Project, which means “Safe Home” in Gaelic.

I was literally creating a safe space for young and old to make dance, music, and theater.

This idea is still the foundation for all of my educational programs, and now informs the work I do as workshop leader and consultant.

What they say

“When Shannon invited our choir to collaborate with local dance students I was happy to help out, but didn’t really know what to expect. The poignant choreographed gestures of Shannon's young dancers with the combination of our choir and the beautiful outdoor setting came together to create a truly moving moment that took me by surprise. I’d encourage  anyone who is open to creative and poignant experiences to consider collaborating with Shannon, as well!”

- Patrick Kronner, director of the Magnificat Choir, University of Notre Dame
